He won two Primera Division de Mexico championships with CD Veracruz in 1945 and 1949. He became the first Mexican player to play in four different countries which were Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Paraguay. De la Fuente retired in 1952 after an accomplished 21 year career. Luis de la Fuente passed away on May 28, 1972 from a heart attack at 58 years old. He was buried facing the Luis “Pirata” Fuente Stadium which was named for him.
