Theus transitioned to coaching and coached the Las Vegas Slam of the ABA in 2002. He served as an assistant coach at Louisville from 2003 to 2005 and coached at New Mexico State from 2005 to 2007. Theus coached the Sacramento Kings from 2007 to 2008 and was an assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2009 to 2011. He coached the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the D-League from 2012 to 2013 and became the head coach at Cal State Northridge in 2013.
