His mother passed away in 1972, leaving he and his sister in charge of the family fortune, much of which was in trust or tied up in one of their many charities. However, he and his sister became estranged a year later, and he ended up with primary control of the family foundations and funds. He started the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, a newspaper, in 1970. The publication is known for openly skewing towards the right and it has never really turned a profit. Mr. Scaife also owns a portion of the media outlet, NewsMax Media.
